Dental Crowns
Forest Grove, OR

At Smith Dental, we can restore the function, strength, and aesthetic to a tooth with the placement of a dental crown. We understand the importance of keeping your natural teeth and root structures, so our dentists, Dr. J. Smith, Dr. R. Smith and Dr. E. Smith, will do what they can to help. If you have a tooth that has fractured, is worn, has significant decay, or needed a root canal procedure done, we can save the tooth by placing a hard customized cap on the tooth, known as a crown.

What is a Crown?

Sometimes referred to as a cap, a dental crown fully encases a tooth inside of a hard tooth shaped structure that has been customized specifically to fit you. Crowns come in a variety of materials, we offer porcelain, porcelain over metal, gold and ceramic crowns. The different materials offer different advantages that Dr. Smith will review with you in determining the best fit.

Why would I need a tooth crown?

There are various reasons a patient may consider having a crown made for a tooth, including:
•  The tooth has considerable decay, meaning the dentist had to remove a large enough portion of the natural tooth that the tooth has weakened and needs the protection of a dental crown.
•  The tooth has broken, or is cracked, and in order to save the tooth, we need to place a dental crown.
•  The patient had a root canal therapy procedure in order to save the tooth. With the root canal the tooth is often weakened, and a dental crown will extend its life.
•  The patient is having a permanent bridge created. To set a bridge, the dentist needs to solid anchors to attach the device to, this is often two healthy teeth, and as anchors, the teeth have dental crowns placed over them.
•  The patient may have a common dental disorder known as bruxism. This disorder involves grinding your teeth or clenching your teeth while you sleep. This can be very damaging to your teeth, either causing fractures or flattening them. We can restore those teeth with dental crowns.

How is a crown placed?

One of our dentists, Dr. J. Smith, Dr. R. Smith or Dr. E. Smith, will take an impression of your bite. The impression will be used to create a customized dental crown, with an emphasis on accuracy to ensure your teeth correctly fit together. Our goal is to provide our patients care both aesthetically but also to allow for correct mastication, or function.

The health of your teeth, it’s enamel, and the ability to function is our business. Call us at (503) 746-9361 to restore your teeth to full health!
